On Tuesday 2nd May 2017, our first year students, along with a few staff members, took a trip to Brantwood, near Coniston. Housed there is a unique lithopone, constructed using various local rock types. The students set out to sample this instrument, recording each note of the lithophone separately and at different velocities. We set up recording equipment in the Linton room and got to work.
Recording the lithopone in shifts, some students ventured out into the surroundings to do some field recording. The nearby lake, gardens, and wildlife provided plenty of sounds to capture using portable recorders. We also made good use of our parabolic reflector; an unusual setup that provides very focused recordings of distant sound sources.
This field trip was a fantastic opportunity for students to venture into sample-oriented recording and field recording in such a lovely location. The great weather helped, too!
